Large numbers of microplastics are transported by rivers towards the ocean. During transportation, microplastics aggregate with suspended sediments, forming microplastic-sediment aggregations (MSA). These aggregations not only influence the fate of microplastics but also potentially alter sediment transport dynamics.
This project aims to improve the understanding of microplastic-sediment aggregation through systematic flocculation experiments. In situ measurement at two ports will be conducted to calibrate and validation these experiments. Ultimately, a parameterization of MSA will be developed to integrate MSA into microplastic fate models.
